Ten years after the
forming of the Uniting
Church, St Andrew's
participated in a study
called "The Next Step".
From this a group of six
decided that their project would be to 'support the outback Flying Padre'. With a group varying from 6 to 26 over a period of 26 years, we have greeted and farewelled four 'flying' padres and now welcome the Rev. David Shrimpton as the new flying Padre. David was formerly working with the Salvation Army in Darwin, doing similar work for outback people.
Over the years we have held lamington drives, parish teas, BBQs, fun days, and many other activities to raise funds.
The funds are sent to the flying padre for expenditure on the plane, to allow him to host activities for needy families in or around Broken Hill, or for him to buy goods to take to needy families on remote properties. The need has been considerable during times of drought, and once because of severe flood.
St Andrew's members have been loyal and generous financial supporters of our FPSG, and when a need arose to send gifts for children in an outback community where Christmas was looking bleak, the response was magnificent.
