Funerals are reverent occasions. At St. Andrew's Uniting Church, Glenbrook, a funeral service is a service of worship conforming to the worship book "Uniting in Worship 2" of the Uniting Church in Australia.
Since the church offers a ministry of love and hope to those who are dying and those who grieve at the death of family or friends, it is important to have a family member or designated person contact the minister or church office whenever death is imminent.
One of the benefits of having a church home is the support and help that the church community can provide for the dying and the bereaved. The family will also want to notify the minister about the death to schedule the funeral service by contacting her on 4739 1853. If it would be helpful, the minister will gladly be present with the family to offer support as decisions are being made with the funeral director. The minister will also need to meet with the family shortly after the time of death to discuss arrangements for funeral and interment services.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
It is the policy of the Uniting Church that the minister in placement conducts the service. Other ministers may participate with the approval of the minister.
The Christian Funeral is a worship service, and as such, the rites of civic, community, and service groups shall not be a part of the service. These rites may occur prior to The Committal.
Occasionally, a request is made for the coffin to be covered with the national flag, in order to honour a specific part of the life of the deceased. Because the national flag may detract from the primary Christian symbols of cross, Bible, baptismal font, and the Lord's Table, it is recommended that the flag either be placed amongst the deceased's mementos or held by an appropriate person and placed on the coffin just prior to The Committal, when additional civil rites may occur.
The family is encouraged to prepare for and plan the funeral in an attitude of simplicity, and the music used in the service should reflect the Christian message.
Catering for a meal or for morning or afternoon tea following the service is available upon request.
Fees for the minister and organist for the Funeral Service are payable through the Funeral Director. There is no charge for the minister for members of St. Andrew's Uniting Church, Glenbrook.
If the deceased was not a member of St. Andrew's Uniting Church, there will be a facilities use fee of $150.00 (includes cleaning and utilities) for the use of the church, payable at the time of the service.
